Surrounded by mountains, many hidden gems are to be found in Bario, the heart of Borneo, a village located in the northeastern region of Sarawak. It is home to the Kelabit tribe, one of the many Orang Ulu (upriver) tribes of Sarawak. The Kelabit population is only about 6,000 strong in Sarawak, out of which only about 1,200 Kelabit still in Bario and the Kelabit highlands as most of them, especially the younger generation have migrated to urban areas such as Lawas & Miri. Bario enjoys a cool climate as it lies 3500 feet above sea level. The place has incredible organic food such as the famous Bario rice and pineapple. One of their annual events is the internationally known Bario Food Festival also known as ‘Pesta Nukenen’, held in July each year. Bario offers various activities such as hiking & trekking, WW2 Memorial, Spring Salt making and local lifestyles. It is affectionately known as the ‘land of a hundred handshakes’ as this is how friendly locals will greet you as you wander around the community.
DAY 1: Miri > Bario (L/D) Depart from Miri to Bario by Maswings flight. Our local guide will meet and greet at the airport. Transfer to Homestay for check-in and lunch. Begin tour with visiting the native market and Bario longhouses while passing through the paddy fields witness the produce of Bario rice. Return to Homestay for dinner and overnight.
DAY 2: Bario (B/L/D) After breakfast, begin trekking up the prayer mountain and visit the Penan settlement on the way back to Homestay. After lunch, begin tour to the Bario’s famous salt spring and witness how the local produce salt from the spring water. Continue visiting the local farms and free at own leisure before back to Homestay for dinner and overnight.
DAY 3: Bario > Miri (B) After breakfast, transfer to airport for departure.
